[material](https://support.paragon-erp.com/manufacturing?hsLang=en#material) July 15, 2026 # Create a material ### **Introduction** Materials can be used to manufacture or assemble your products using [bills of material](https://support.paragon-erp.com/creating-and-updating-the-product-bill-of-materials-bom?hsLang=en) in ParagonERP. This article will explain how to create a new material. ### **Process description:** Materials are usually tracked separately from finished products for many reasons - mostly to keep raw material inventory separate from finished goods, and to know the cost of buying and storing these materials.   ### **Step-by-step instructions:** - #### **Step 1: Go to the material module** From any screen in ParagonERP, click the **material** button from the **more** menu.   ![](https://support.paragon-erp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Material%20module-jpg-2.jpeg?width=527&height=536&name=Material%20module-jpg-2.jpeg)     - #### **Step 2: Create a new material** This is the [list view](https://support.paragon-erp.com/aglv-using-list-view?hsLang=en) of the material module. The first field, in this case *code*, is mandatory and must be unique. In **edit **mode, simply click the **add **button on the business card of your material. #### ![](https://support.paragon-erp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Add%20image-jpg.jpeg?width=1641&height=637&name=Add%20image-jpg.jpeg) When you click the add button the upload image module will open, where you can either select an image from your local files by clicking the **add file **button or simply copy and paste an image URL. - #### **Step 4: Add more attributes and information** The attributes that appear on the **material attributes** screen were set up in screen setup as *always show.* To add attributes from the main screen, click the **add new attribute** button. You can choose to add any of these attributes to the material that you are creating. If the attribute you'd like to enter is not in this list, you will need to create a new one and add it to the [screen setup](https://support.paragon-erp.com/how-to-set-up-reference-screens?hsLang=en) of the material module. Alternatively, you can click the **cancel** button, if you no longer want to create this item. ![](https://support.paragon-erp.com/hubfs/Knowledge%20Base%20Import/edbsn2dc208d6ff0e7dda3a74067bc896e745ac9e9cf7fd9d168fd34913338a8e43b05af8e4df28dbd7e21d4e82282183a415-1-1-3-1.png) Any fields that are left blank will no longer show on the screen after saving.   - #### **Step 6: Activate the material** In order to add the material to a transaction, it needs to be active. If a material is still set as inactive it cannot be used. To adjust your inventory, follow these steps: 1. Click the **location** bar to open a drop down menu of your [locations](https://support.paragon-erp.com/create-new-locations?hsLang=en) 2. Select the warehouse location for which you wish to adjust the inventory. 3.
