Managing sales discounts and pricing hierarchy
Learn how to set up sales discounts, manage pricing hierarchies, and perform bulk price updates using Excel imports in Paragon.
Table of contents
In Paragon, standard selling prices are managed in the price book module. However, when you need to apply specific customer deals, volume-based tier pricing, or promotional percentages, you use the sales discounts module.
Discount hierarchy setup
Before creating discounts, you must define which rules take priority. Navigate to settings > finance > discount hierarchy.
-
Activate: Check the active column for the types of discounts you want to use (e.g., Customer/Product, Customer/Price Group).
-
Rank: Use the first column to number the priority. This tells Paragon which discount table to check first when calculating an order price.
Managing sales discounts
To view or create discounts, navigate to the sales discounts module (found under the more arrow in the bottom-left menu). The options available on the left sidebar will match the categories you activated in your hierarchy.
-
Add a discount: Click edit at the top right, then use the plus (+) icon.
-
Modify: Click edit at the end of an existing row to change values.
Key discount fields
When setting up a discount, the following fields ensure the correct logic is applied:
-
Customer & product: Select the specific account and item. Depending on the discount type, these might be replaced by groups (e.g., Customer Group or Price Group).
-
Minimum quantity: Use this for volume-based pricing (tiers). If left at zero, the discount applies to any quantity.
-
Price & discount %: You can enter a fixed net price, a discount percentage, or a combination of both.
-
Currency: Enter specific values for each currency you use. If a specific currency record is missing, Paragon will use exchange rate conversions.
-
Dates: A start date is mandatory and cannot be in the past. An end date is optional and is often managed automatically by the system during updates.
Bulk updates via export and import
For large-scale price changes or currency conversions, using Excel is the most efficient method.
-
Export: Click the export button to download your current discount list as a template.
-
Edit: You can apply percentage increases or duplicate lists for other currencies. Ensure the price book name (e.g., Standard Price Book EUR) matches exactly.
-
Import: Upload your file to apply changes.
Tracking price history: If you change a price by importing a new start date, Paragon automatically assigns an end date to the previous record. For example, a price active from Jan 1st will automatically end on Oct 31st if a new price record is imported starting Nov 1st.
Tip: Enable the show active prices only checkbox to hide expired discounts and keep your workspace organized.
