Adding a bill of material to a transaction

Introduction

Manufacturing goods is a complex piece of any business. Paragon helps to simplify the product life-cycle by streamlining the path all products need to take. Every manufactured product is made up of component materials (steel, plastic, fabric, nuts, bolts...). Paragon presents users with an easy way to add and track product bill of materials. A bill of material must exist so that you can add it to your work order.
This article will show you how to add a new bill of material to your work order as well as how to edit an existing custom BoM on a work order line. These steps can be followed for other transaction modules as well.

Check your settings

Before you get started, make sure that Paragon has been configured to allow custom BoM for the module you want. This is set up in transaction screens.

Add bill of material data for the product

Navigate to the product module.

Select the product and go to the BoM tab. You will see the material, tools, and labor buttons on the right-hand side. Select one of these buttons in edit mode to start adding to the BoM of the product. Click on the add new button to add the items you want.

Select the items. When you are done, click the accept button. To learn more about adding items, you can read our guide on how to use the add items modal.

You can add values for quantity and UOM (unit of measure) for each line item by clicking on the empty field and inputting values.

To finish up and add your BoM to your product, save your changes.

If you have added a new product instead of selecting an existing product, don't forget to confirm that it is activated so that it will show up in the system

Create a new work order

Navigate to the work order module.

Click on the add new work order button.

You can choose an existing order or a quote to create the work order. To create a work order from scratch, click the manual option. For more information on creating work orders you can read our article Creating a Work Order.

Click the add new button to add products to the work order.

Select the product(s) you want to add and click the accept button when you are done.

You can look for the product you want by using the search feature

Right-click on the product line item and click edit custom BoM.

You must be in edit mode in order to select this option.

Any of the materials, tools, and labor data you have added for this product will now be visible in the custom BoM modal.

Editing an existing custom BoM

After adding any item to the work order, the BoM for that item will automatically be added to the work order line. This default bill of materials is generally considered an estimated set of requirements for that item (materials, labors, and their associated costs). When you create the work order, that specific set of requirements may need to be changed or made unique (maybe your client needs special labeling or a very specific set of work done to the item before the goods are shipped). With any existing custom BoM, you are able to adjust the items within it. When you have opened the Custom BoM modal you have the option to add or delete lines as well as change the cost.

If you are changing the cost of any items, remember to tick the box update the cost on the work order line at the bottom to adjust the costs in the work order.  You might have to activate this in settings. Follow our article on how to calculate cost on a work order based on its custom BOM to learn more.

Adding a new custom BoM

If you have not set up a custom BoM in a product before creating a work order, you can still set one up. Simply add a new product to your work order and follow the same steps as you would to add to a product BoM.

To start, right-click on the product line item and click on edit custom BoM.

Next, click on the blue add item button to start adding lines to your custom BoM.

Next, add the necessary lines for the product, changing cost if needed, and click on the accept button.

And that's it! Your custom BoM's have been added to your work order!
